Joshua Phillips was playing baseball with his 8-year-old neighbor, Maddie Clifton, when he accidentally struck her over the eye with his baseball bat, causing her eye to bleed and her to scream in pain. Fearing his abusive father would come home and beat him for inviting people into his house when he wasn’t supposed to, Joshua dragged Maddie into his bedroom where he continued to beat Maddie with the baseball bat and stab her until she was dead. He then stuffed her body under his waterbed mattress. A week later, while his mother was cleaning Josh’s room, she discovered a “leak” from his waterbed. When she went to investigate, she found Maddie’s leaking body. Panicked, she called police and Josh was arrested.
